The identification of the Hellenion is based on inscribed fragments of pottery that was found inside and around the temenos and they proof the worship of various deities. Hellenion hosts mainly the worship of greek deities and it consists an early form of collective worship between the diverse greek population of Naukratis. In the 5th c.BC Hellenion reached the pick of its glory.

• Herodotus (2.178) mentions that Hellenion was the most popular and most visited sancuary in Naukratis. Also, he informs us that his time, the Hellenion had a major role in the administration of the port.
