Jouktas rises at 811 m above sea level and overlooks N Central Crete. The outline of Jouktas resembles a human face and tradition places there the birth of Zeus.

- There are Hel to Byz texts referring to the tomb of Zeus in different parts of Crete. A more recent tradition among the Cretans places the tomb on Juktas (Evans 1921, 154).
